Hattiesburg claps back at Tennessee fan who said Mississippi city âsucksâ for lack of Applebeeâs
Tennessee and Southern Miss square off in Game 3 of their NCAA Super Regional series Monday, but the real fight appears to be taking place on social media.
At the center of it all is Applebee’s. More accurately, the idea that there is no Applebee’s in Hattiesburg.
One Tennessee fan called out the city for not having the eatery sparking comments from the city of Hattiesburg. Apparently, he wasn’t eatin’ good in the neighborhood.
“What I’m actually saying is “wow your town sucks, you can’t even keep an Applebee’s open,” he tweeted.
The city’s official Twitter account clapped back.
“Our thriving economy is home to more than 200 local restaurants. Granted, it may not be the bourbon street steak and oreo shake you love.”
The reference, of course, is to Walker Hayes’ “Fancy Like,” his ode to Applebee’s.
“Fancy Like” became a hit with crossover appeal in June 2021. It even influenced the return of the Oreo shake at the restaurant chain. “Yeah, we fancy like Applebee’s on a date night (that’s right). Got that Bourbon Street steak with the Oreo shake (ayy),” the song states.
Southern Miss beat Tennessee 5-3 to complete the suspended first game of the Hattiesburg Super Regional and Blake Burke had a double, a home run and two RBIs to help the Volunteers win Game 2 8-4 and force a decisive Game 3.
